Alphonsus Liguorii
The Redemptorists, a missionary community founded in Italy in 1732 by Alphonsus Liguori, were called to Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré by Bishop Elzéar-Alexandre Taschereau, to take charge of the pilgrimage undertaking and the parish of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré.

Bishop Gauvreau, the last diocesan parish priest to be appointed here, strongly insisted that a religious community take over at Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré.

The first Redemptorists arrived at Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré at the beginning of December, 1878. They came from Baltimore. They were replaced in 1879 by priests coming from Belgium. It was the Belgium priests who would establish the Redemptorist Congregation in Canada. Since then, they have been the guardians of the Shrine, which has become for them a permanent mission.
